LUND LECTURESHIP

Herbert Z Lund, MD was a superb educator and for many years taught the Dermatology residents at UNC and Duke dermatopathology in a joint learning environment. Because of this dedication to teaching and because of the fostering of collegiality between institutions, this titular lectureship was set up.

Each year, the SEC has one speaker invited as the Lund Lecturer. This honor is given to a clinician or scientist of the highest caliber who is recognized as an expert in his or her field. The Lund Lecturer may give one or two lectures and may also help to provide discussion on the case presentations on Sunday.
The following is the biography of Herbert Zack Lund, M.D.

Personal
Born 1907 Salt Lake City
Father was a busy general practitioner.
Grandfather was next in line to become the president of the Mormon Church.
In 1935, married Juliet Isabel Litman and had 4 children.
Died at age 88 on February 3, 1996.

Education

  • Attended state college at Indiana Penna with teaching certificate.
  • In 1927, taught school briefly and then went into medical technology.
  • Graduated from University of Utah.
  • University of Utah Med School (then only 2 year school) and transferred to University of Pennsylvania where received M.D.
  • Internship: Geisinger Hospital
  • Residency: Philadelphia General Hospital
  • Residency in Pathology, Jefferson Medical College
  • 1934-1940 Pathologist in charge of Laboratory, Uniontown, Pennsylvania
  • 1940-1941 Fellow in Legal Medicine, Harvard University

Positions Held

  • 1942 – 1946 Pathologist at Cleveland City Hospital
  • 1946 – 1952 Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor of Pathology, Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio
  • 1952 – 1968 Director of Laboratories, Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, NC
  • 1952 – 1986 Clinical Professor of Pathology and later of Dermatology as well,
    University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC
  • 1968 – 1986 Pathologist, Head of Dermatopathology Services, Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC and later semi-retired Consultant.

  • Natural biologic history pigmented moles and pathologic changes of sun-damaged skin.
